미국 남침례교 목사이자 사우스웨스트대 기독교학과 석좌교수인 케빈 월드롭(Kevin Waldrop) 박사가 “한국 교회와 시민이 공포와 억압 정치에 저항해 자유민주주의를 수호해야 한다”고 호소했다. 

월드롭 박사는 최근 영상을 통해 발표한 성명에서 “김일성 숭배 세력이 한국 사회 각계에 깊이 침투한 현 상황에서 저항이 필요하다”며 이같이 강조했다. 

그는 “1945년 해방 이후 남한이 기독교인인 이승만 초대 대통령의 지도로 자유민주주의를 정착시켰으나, 북한은 김일성식 전체주의와 개인숭배에 기반한 세습 독재 체제로 주민을 통제해 왔다”며 “남한은 기독교가 번성해 세계 선교의 중심지가 됐음에도 동시에 김일성의 이념적 영향력이 수십 년간 퍼져나가 그 추종자들이 입법·사법·행정부뿐 아니라 언론·교육·종교계에까지 침투해 김일성 일가의 개인숭배를 조장하고 있다”고 개탄했다. 

그러면서 교회 등에 대한 공권력의 강제수사를 복음주의에 반기를 드는 현상으로 해석했다. 월드롭 박사는 “한국 (이재명) 정부가 특별검사를 구성하고 기독교 성직자들을 상대로 불법 압수수색을 감행했고 성경적 진리와 가치를 옹호했던 한 복음주의 목사는 반대 의견을 표명했다는 이유로 체포되고 투옥됐다”고 우려를 표했다. 

또한 “기독교 복음 방송사를 비롯한 독립 언론사들에 대한 불법 압수수색과 수사는 헌법이 보장하는 종교와 표현의 자유를 침해하는 행위”라고 주장하고 “이에 대응해 미국 교회들은 한국 기독교의 보존과 대한민국의 자유 수호가 불가분의 관계임을 확언한다”며 한국 교회와 국민에게 행동을 촉구하는 선언문을 발표했다. 

다음은 행동촉구문 내용.

기독교 복음과 자유민주주의 수호를 위한 행동 촉구

1. Korean churches—wake up, stand firm, and unite! Put on the full armor of God and engage in spiritual warfare with courage and faith. (Ephesians 6:10–20) 

한국 교회들이여, 깨어나 굳건히 서서 연합하라! 하나님의 전신갑주를 입고 담대함과 믿음으로 영적 싸움에 임하라. (에베소서 6:10-20) 

2. Korean churches have both a voice and a sacred duty to defend liberal democracy. They must stand against falsehood, corruption, evil, and injustice and all treasonous and rebellious threats against liberal democracy in this anti-democratic age. (John 3:19–20) 한국 교회는 자유민주주의를 수호할 목소리와 신성한 의무를 가지고 있다. 한국 교회는 이 반민주주의 시대에 거짓, 부패, 악행, 불의, 그리고 자유민주주의를 파괴하려는 대한 모든 반역적이고 내란의 위협에 맞서 싸워야 한다. (요한복음 3:19-20) 

3. Korean churches and citizens share a biblical responsibility to uphold liberal democracy by resisting the politics of fear and oppression that threaten the constitutional separation of church and state. (Galatians 5:1) 

한국 교회와 시민들은 교회와 국가의 헌법상의 정교분리를 위협하는 공포와 억압의 정치에 저항함으로써 자유민주주의를 수호할 성경적 책임을 공유한다. (갈라디아서 5:1)

4. We strongly urge the current South Korean government, led by the Democratic Party’s super majority, to end its undemocratic politics of fear and unilateral legislation that undermine the constitutional separation of powers 

우리 미국교회들은 더불어민주당의 압도적 다수가 이끄는 현 한국 정부가 헌법상의 삼권분립을 훼손하는 비민주적인 공포 정치와 일방적인 입법독재를 종식할 것을 강력히 촉구한다.

5. The American churches—whose missionary work began in Korea 140 years ago—call on Korean Christians to stand boldly for the Gospel, opposing all lies, injustice, evil, and lawlessness. (John 8:32) 

140년 전 한국에서 선교 사역을 시작한 미국 교회들은 한국 그리스도인들에게 모든 거짓, 불의, 악행, 불법에 대항하여 복음을 위해 담대히 일어설 것을 촉구한다. (요한복음 8:32) 

6. We, the American churches, pray that Korean pastors recognize that the current crisis in Korea is spiritual in nature. May they seek biblical discernment and respond in the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit. (Deuteronomy 32:28–29) 

우리 미국 교회들은 한국 목회자들이 현재 한국의 위기가 영적인 것임을 인식하고, 성경적 분별력을 구하며 성령의 지혜와 능력으로 대응하기를 기도한다. (신명기 32:28-29) 

7. We, the American churches, pray that Korean pastors will not be deceived by false claims of “peace” or “peaceful reunification” promoted by pro-communist groups. A communist takeover would bring suffering to millions of Christian believers and defenders of a free Korea. (1 Peter 5:8) 

우리 미국 교회들은 한국 목회자들이 친공산주의 단체들이 조장하는 ‘평화’ 또는 ‘평화 통일’이라는 거짓 주장에 속지 않기를 기도한다. 공산주의가 한국을 장악하면 수백만 명의 기독교 신자들과 자유 대한민국을 옹호하는 사람들에게 고통을 안겨줄 것이다. (베드로전서 5:8)

8. We urge Korean churches to observe how freedoms in Hong Kong have been suppressed under the Chinese Communist Party’s security laws and surveillance control—and to recognize the warning this presents. 

우리는 한국 교회들이 중국 공산당의 보안법과 감시 통제하에서 홍콩의 자유가 어떻게 억압되고 있는지 주의 깊게 살피고, 이것이 한국에 대한 현재의 경고가 됨을 인식하기를 촉구한다. 

9. We pray for religious freedom and the preservation of a liberal democratic system in Korea. We strongly urge the Korean Democratic Party to cease its illegal legislative actions that enable censorship and unjust searches of Christian pastors. Korean Christians must unite, stand firm, and engage prayerfully in this spiritual battle to defend freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and truth against false propaganda. (James 4:7) 

우리는 한국의 종교의 자유와 자유민주주의 체제의 보존을 위해 기도한다. 우리는 한국 더불어민주당이 기독교 목회자들에 대한 검열과 부당한 수사를 가능하게 하는 불법적인 입법 행위를 중단할 것을 강력히 촉구한다. 한국 기독교인들은 연합하고, 굳건히 서서, 거짓 선전에 맞서 종교의 자유, 표현의 자유, 그리고 진리를 수호하기 위한 이 영적 싸움에 기도하는 마음으로 참여해야 한다. (야고보서 4:7) 

10. We call on the South Korean government to immediately release the imprisoned Christian pastor and to end all illegal searches and seizures targeting independent media and Christian broadcasters. 

우리는 한국 정부가 투옥한 기독교 목사를 즉시 석방하고, 독립 언론들과 기독교 복음 방송사를 대상으로 한 모든 불법 수색과 압수를 중단할 것을 강력히 촉구한다.
